Biography

The Backlash is a rock'n'roll band formed in Milan in 2013 by Francesco Lucà (guitarist and composer) and Luca Mangano (drummer). Joined by Mattia Cochetti (bassist) and Alessio Gatto (vocals), the band crafted their first song, "Great Big Chance," and quickly established their signature style, blending indie rock, Britpop, shoegaze, noise, and psychedelic rock influences.

Winners of the "Emergenza Festival" contest in 2013, The Backlash quickly gained traction, performing on iconic stages such as Tunnel and Alcatraz. Their first EP, "3rd Generation," was released in 2014 under Rocketman Records, earning rave reviews and leading to performances across Italy, Spain, France, and the UK, including a show at the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool. The band also released singles like "New Course," further expanding their audience.

In 2018, The Backlash released their debut LP, "Mindtrap," featuring tracks like "Run!" and "Mindtrap." The album was promoted with live shows supporting acts such as We Are Scientists and The Academic, as well as appearances at "In A State Of Flux," Italy’s premier shoegaze festival.

In 2020, The Backlash released the EP "Passing By," recorded at their self-built studio, "Right Bright Side (RBS)." The single "Everybody But Me" was mastered by Frank Arkwright (The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Oasis, Primal Scream) at Abbey Road Studios. Despite setbacks due to the pandemic, the EP received critical acclaim and airplay.

In 2023, The Backlash released their second LP, "Rise," featuring the four tracks from "Passing By" along with five new songs. The album was mastered by James Aparicio (Depeche Mode, Spiritualized, Mogwai, Grinderman), showcasing the band’s continued evolution. Following a lineup change, with Giuseppe Musto (drums) and Corrado Carnevali (bass) joining the founding members, the band embarked on live dates across Italy, France, and Germany.

At the start of 2025, The Backlash is set to release a double A-side 7" vinyl to mark their return to the UK, where they will perform a four-date tour.
